We don't ask you to have all the answers. We ask you to show up consistently, lead with humility, and trust that God will do the rest.

The Role

What Does a Group Leader Actually Do?

Leading a group is more about presence than performance. Here's what it looks like week to week.

Host the Gathering

Facilitate your group's regular meetings — whether in person or virtually. Create an environment where people feel safe, welcomed, and valued.

Guide the Discussion

Lead your group through curriculum, questions, or devotionals. You don't need to be a theologian — you need to be a good listener and a thoughtful guide.

Shepherd Your Members

Check in on your group. Celebrate milestones. Pray for needs. Be the person who notices when someone goes quiet — and reaches out.

Champion the Vision

Connect your group to the larger mission of Abyssinian. Help your members see themselves as part of something bigger than the circle you meet in.

Invest in Your Own Growth

Attend leader training, retreats, and workshops. Stay spiritually sharp. You can't pour from an empty cup.

Multiply Community

The ultimate goal: grow your group to a point where it can multiply — sending people out to start new groups and expand Aby Groups' reach across the community.

Church Membership

Be a member of The Abyssinian Baptist Church, or actively in the process of becoming one. Leaders must be grounded in and accountable to this community.

Alignment with the Vision

Strongly support the church's vision as presented by the Senior Pastor. Leaders set the culture of their group — that culture must reflect the heart and direction of Abyssinian.

Leadership Training

Complete required leadership training and actively participate in leadership ministry retreats, seminars, and workshops. We invest in your development — we ask you to show up for it.

Personal Spiritual Growth

Engage in ongoing personal spiritual growth and development. This includes your own devotional life, prayer practice, and engagement with your faith outside of group gatherings.

Consistent, Generous Giving

Be a consistent and generous giver (tither) to the church. Generosity is a posture of the heart — and tithing reflects a commitment to the mission you're asking others to join.

Weekly Time Commitment

Dedicate at least one hour per week to the organizational growth and enhancement of your group — beyond the gathering itself. This includes follow-up, planning, and personal outreach to members.

Background Check

Successfully complete a background check prior to leading. This is a non-negotiable step that protects the safety and trust of every person in your group.

Leader Training

Foundational training before you launch — covering facilitation skills, pastoral care, group dynamics, and Abyssinian's vision for community.

Leadership Community

You'll be connected with other Aby Group leaders — a peer network for encouragement, shared resources, and accountability.

Retreats & Workshops

Annual leadership retreats and seasonal workshops designed to deepen your skills, renew your vision, and strengthen your connection to the Abyssinian family.

Curriculum & Resources

Access to vetted study materials, group guides, and discussion resources so you're never starting from scratch.

No. We're not looking for experts — we're looking for people with a heart for community. You'll receive training and resources to guide your group well, but your willingness and consistency matter far more than any credentials.

That's completely okay. Many of our best leaders started with zero formal leadership experience. Our training is designed to meet you where you are. If you have a genuine desire to serve people, we'll help you build the rest.

We ask for at least one hour per week dedicated to organizational growth and care for your group members — in addition to hosting the actual gathering. Most leaders find it takes two to three hours per week in total, including prep, the meeting, and follow-up.

Groups meet in a variety of settings — homes, community spaces, virtually, or at the church. As a leader, you choose the format that works best for your group and your season of life.

Yes — if you're actively in the process of becoming a member, you're welcome to apply and begin the conversation. Membership is a requirement before you launch a group, but it doesn't have to be completed before you start the application process.

Once your application is received, we'll walk you through a simple, confidential background screening process. This is required for all leaders and is a standard part of our commitment to creating safe spaces for every member of the Abyssinian community.

Groups can be organized around life stage (young professionals, parents, seniors), interest (faith and fitness, men's group, women's group), or neighborhood. We'll work with you to identify the type of group that best matches your calling and the community you want to serve.
